Regina Wielingen Workshop- Monday 11th April 2016

The workshop commenced at 9:30 am, starting with a warm up which primarily focused on spine articulation, rolling through the spine and how the placement of our body can initiate this movement. The importance of the knowing, and being aware of the space around our bodies whilst curving, opening and stretching was evident, in all of the exercises we took part in.  Thereafter, Regina had instructed us to move around the whole space. Exercises included walking, sliding and running. Again, still keeping in mind the shapes our bodies were making int he space and moving with purpose.

In the afternoon, Regina has set us a creative task whereby we were to create a solo based on the shape of the numbers in our own mobile numbers. We had worked on this for approximately 15 minutes, and we the had a sharing of our work. During this task, I considered how my body could make shapes, both big and small, and how to travel this through space. Regina had asli given feedback, which i responded to by travelling around others and adding height and dynamics to my work.

After this, dancers were called together to work with Regina, to produce an opening piece of choreography, some of hwhuch could be used a s a stiulus for the Final Major Project. Some movement was an extension of the phrases we had learnt earlier in the session.

Evaluation

What went well?

What were my strengths?

I was able to respnd well to feedback from Regina in regards to the placement of my body and body/spine articulation. Corrections I received were rectified very quickly, and I continued to keep these in mind for future exercises  and phrases that we did throughout the day. I feel that the technique aspect of the workshop was when I was able to perform to the best of my ability. Comprehension of choreography thata appeared to be more technique based was

What were my weaknessess?

Several weaknessess arose during parts of the workshop, typically when I was unfamiliar with some of Regina's methods of choreography and teaching. At times the teaching was quite fast paced, which I did find challenging. As a result, I did struggle to fully embody the movement, which meant it was quite confined and very little projection was present.

What could I improve upon?

Some of the things that I could improve upon for future workshops are;

  • As a dancer, being able to adapt to enjoy learning a new way of dancing and performing and making the most of this

  • Remaining focused, and keeping a sense of professionalism throughout a new process

  • Staying confident, and showing this whilst performing

How did this process develop me as a performer/dancer?

This process as exposed me to several things such as learning and exploring a neww way of moving through space, and being enabled to see my body move in a way I have never seen. In addition to this, I now feel more motivated to expand my knowledge on other dance artists, and to really become familiar with who and what I am inspired y.
